Club 1722 gives HIV info to African-American LGBT youth
by Derek Barnett
Cleveland-After three years of planning, Black Out Unlimited will begin a program to reach African American gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth through its newly established Club 1722 Youth Project.
The program is specifically targeted toward HIV prevention and education initiatives. A contractual arrangement signed September 14 between BlackOut and the AIDS Taskforce of Cleveland will provide funding.
"The need to work with our youth-our future is something that we have had a strong desire to do since our inception," said Black Out co-founder and program coordina-
tor Larry Webb. "The agreement with the AIDS Taskforce makes it possible for us to do in a way that is responsive to what our youth deserve."
The Taskforce is subsidizing Club 1722 through a grant from the Ohio Department of Health.
"We think it makes sense to partner with and empower organizations that serve communities challenged by HIV. They are able to reach audiences that sometimes we can't," commented Taskforce executive director Earl Pike.
Blackout plans to reach the targeted population through monthly discussion groups and social and cultural events designed to promote risk reduction behaviors. Among the issues
"The need to work with our youth-our future-is something that we have had a strong desire to do since our inception."
addressed by the program are self identity, sexual identity, HIV and safer sex, career planning and goal setting.
Founded in 1997, BlackOut Unlimited is a nonprofit organization which seeks to raise the level of consciousness of and about Cleveland's African American same-gender-loving community.
Activities include the Club 1722 Youth Project, a quarterly conversation series, an entertainment series and BlackOut Weekend, Ohio's first and largest annual event for the African American same-gender-loving community.
